Casting Net: Josh Hutcherson, Zach Braff cast in James Franco's 'In Dubious Battle'
James Franco has rounded out the cast of his adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel In Dubious Battle with stars Josh Hutcherson, Zach Braff, Analeigh Tipton, Ashley Greene and Ahna O’Reilly. Based on Steinbeck’s 1936 novel, the film portrays the struggle among a group of fruit pickers in 1930s California who are organizing a strike. Oliver Platt, Charlie Heaton, Jacob Tremblay, David Cubitt (Medium) and French actress Clementine Poidatz have been cast in the thriller Shut In starring Naomi Watts. The script centers on a widowed child psychologist (Watts) who lives in isolation in rural New England. Caught in a deadly winter storm, she has to find a way to rescue a young boy before he disappears forever. The film recently began shooting in Montreal before moving to other locations. Edgar Ramirez (Zero Dark Thirty) has joined Matthew McConaughey in the upcoming mining drama, Gold. The film is based on the true story about the 1993 Bre-X Mineral Corporation mining scandal, and revolves around an unlikely pair traveling to the Indonesian jungle in search of the highly valued soft metal. Production begins in June with filming locations in New York, New Mexico and Thailand. [Deadline]
Rob Brydon, Alexandra Roach and Sheridan Smith will be joining Nick Frost as dwarfs in Universal’s The Huntsman, starring Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron. The film reveals how two characters, the Huntsman Eric (Hemsworth) and Ravenna (Theron), intersected before they met Snow White. The film will be released on April 22, 2016. [Variety]
Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez is in talks to play the female lead opposite Mark Wahlberg in Peter Berg’s Deepwater Horizon. The film chronicles the 2010 BP oil spill with Wahlberg set to play Mike Williams, an electrician aboard the doomed oil rig. Rodriguez would play Andrea Fleytas, who was helping to operate the oil rig’s navigation machinery when she noticed that no one had issued a distress signal. She grabbed the radio and attempted to contact the Coast Guard and was reprimanded for it. The movie has a scheduled Sept. 30, 2016 release date. [The Wrap]
