David Geffen donates $100M to Lincoln Center, gets concert hall named for him
Philanthropist and music/media executive David Geffen gave a $100 million gift to New York’s famous concert hall Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the venue announced in a press release Wednesday. Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall will be renamed David Geffen Hall in September 2015 at the beginning of the New York Philharmonic’s 2015-2016 season.
His $100 million provides a healthy start to the approximately $500 million needed for comprehensive renovations of the concert hall, which are on track to begin construction in 2019.
The native New Yorker is no stranger to contributions such as this—Geffen has given more than $300 million to UCLA and has made substantial arts-related gifts, including donations to the Museum of Modern Art, The Academy of Motion Pictures, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
