Since its inception, Liturgy and its frontman Hunter Hunt-Hendrix have courted controversy and defied categorization with a series of bold aesthetic innovations, beginning with the “transcendental black metal” of their 2009 debut Renihilation (which injected potent spiritual uplift into a niche genre defined by its nihilism, and pissing off black metal purists to no end) to their new LP The Ark Work (out now on Thrill Jockey), a fascinatingly confounding fusion of black metal, glitch music, deep-underground hip-hop, and medieval sacred music. In order to get a better grasp on what’s happening on the album, EW reached out to Hunt-Hendrix for a playlist of music that influenced the album.

“This is a mix of some music that has influenced me greatly over the years,” he says, “and other songs that I happen to be into at the moment.”

“Messe du Jour de Noel (Ensemble Organum),” Leonin

Leonin is considered by many to be the official first composer in western history, drawing polyphonic composition out of gregorian chant. I love the way he goes through the text of the mass here and then stops on certain syllables to resonate and vibe out polyphonically before then moving on to the next. Totally hypnotizing.”

Liturgy will hit the road behind The Ark Work in April.
