Last night and this morning, social media exploded as it failed to definitively answer one simple question: “What colors are this dress?”

With celebrities speaking out and friendships and families on the line, the nation stood divided. Is the dress white and gold, or blue and black? Thankfully, today we’ve been offered several thinkpieces on why no one can seem to agree. Wired offered up scientific reasoning, while TIME holds to the claim the dress is blue and black after all—but Twitter still can’t get over #dressgate. (It’s currently still trending, folks.)

Of course, this isn’t the first dress to stir up a little controversy and create an iconic pop culture moment. So EW decided to put our own second-day news spin on #TheDress debate, and remember a few other iconic dresses that were also misunderstood.
