Calista Flockhart is getting into the superhero genre. The Ally McBeal actress is plotting a return to broadcast TV on CBS’ Supergirl.

Flockhart has been cast as the boss of Supergirl’s alter ego Kara Zor-El. She’ll play Cat Grant, a self-made media magnate and founder of CatCo who started her career as a reporter and then built her company into a global powerhouse. Kara (series star Melissa Benoist) works at CatCo as Grant’s assistant (who can probably run Grant’s errands really quickly). Last week, the cast also added Nashville actress Laura Benanti as Kara’s Kryptonian mom.

Since Fox’s Ally McBeal, Flockhart had a series regular role on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters, an arc on Showtime’s Web Therapy, and a role on DirecTV’s Full Circle.

Supergirl is a pilot with a penalty if it doesn’t go to series, though it’s considered one of the safest bets around for getting a series order, given its buzz. At the TCA press tour, CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler promised the costume is “awesome” and explained the show will have its hero solving crimes.
