Scream Factory to release collector's-edition 'Escape From New York'
“There was an accident — about an hour ago, a small jet went down inside New York City. The President was on board.”
“President of what?”
“That’s not funny, Plissken.”
Oh, but it so is funny. Either way, the big Blu-ray news of the week (at least as far as I’m concerned) is that boutique genre label Scream Factory will be releasing a 2-disc set of the mighty Escape From New York on April 21. Directed by John Carpenter, this 1981 science-fiction classic stars Kurt Russell as eye patch-sporting scoundrel Snake Plissken who is tasked with rescuing Donald Pleasence’s commander-in-chief from the walled-in prison which the Big Apple has become in the oh-so distant future of, uh, 1997. In addition to Russell and Pleasence, the film stars Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Isaac Hayes, and the great Adrienne Barbeau at her most Adrienne Barbeau-esque. Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is a cast.
The Blu-ray set boasts a 2K high definition scan of the film struck from the original negative and a host of new extras, including an audio commentary with Barbeau and director of photography Dean Cundey, a featurette about the movie’s visual effects, and a discussion with composer Alan Howarth.
We advise you to pre-order now—before that thing thing in your neck explodes.
