SNL gag adds still-living Jon Lovitz to In Memoriam segment
Jon Lovitz: dead?
One of the most unexpected, hilarious, and morbid jokes of Saturday Night Live‘s 40th anniversary was the implication that the very much alive comedian was no longer with us. The gag began with Steve Martin’s opening monologue: “We’ll pay tribute to those SNL greats who are no longer with us: John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Jon Lovitz,” Martin said. Cut to: a mad Lovitz in the audience.
It would have been a funny bit on its own—but then Lovitz was included at the end of the show’s actual “in memoriam” montage, right after Gilda Radner (who died in 1989).
Just in case you were confused, NBC confirmed that Lovitz is indeed not dead.
The original late-night comedy sketch show from the one and only Lorne Michaels.
