“Comedy is like heart surgery, ” Josh Gad tells the camera in the first episode of The Comedians. “It gets botched all the time.”

This FX comedy figuratively wheels you into the OR to see just how messy it can get when a network tries to manufacture laughs. The meta premise? Old comedy warhorse Billy Crystal (played by Billy Crystal) has been reluctantly paired with the up-and-coming Josh Gad (Josh Gad) to star in an FX sketch comedy, and a documentary crew is filming all of their behind-the-scenes sniping and shenanigans. As Gad sums up to EW: “He comes from more of an old-school mentality of wanting the purity of comedy in the way that he experienced it growing up in the industry, and I come from more of a take-no prisoners approach in that Apatow age of scatological humor and edgy comedy. And when the two of those things come to a head with each other, there’s conflict.”

Below, you can get an exclusive peek of the first trailer for The Comedians, which premieres April 9. Warning: May contain horny bear-humping and oversized diapers.
