Tracee Ellis Ross is perhaps best known for her role as Joan on Girlfriends. This year, however, she’s come back into the spotlight with Black-ish, playing Rainbow on ABC’s freshman comedy, created by Kenya Barris.

Now, she’s on the cover of Essence for its March split-cover issue, discussing her career and comedy upbringings: “I grew up watching Carol Burnett and Lucy,” Ross told EW. “They taught me that you can be glamorous and gorgeous and still be roll-in-the-mud funny. Realizing that one didn’t take away from the other gave me the license and freedom to do what I’m doing today.” Keep on doing it, Ross.
