Kanye West storms Grammy stage, says Beck shouldn't have won
When will music award shows finally learn to consult with Kanye West before deciding who wins?
At Sunday night’s 57th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, West stormed the stage to protest Beck’s Morning Phase winning Album of the Year (video below). The rather familiar move initially echoed West’s infamous stage-storm and mike-grabbing from Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Awards. This time, however, things went down differently.
Beck seemed to quickly recognize what was going on and actually invited West to do whatever it was that he felt so compelled to do. But West apparently thought better of actually grabbing the mike, reversed his course and quickly left the stage stage — causing some to assume he was maybe just somehow joking around.
Backstage, however, West let loose to Khloe Kardashian, who was reporting on the event for E! News, explaining Beck beating fellow nominee Beyonce is an affront to creativity and slamming Grammy organizers. “We ain’t gonna play with them no more,” he said. “Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé. At this point — we’re tired of it, because what happens is, you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you are disrespectful to inspiration.”
Now here’s a twist: Beck actually agreed with West, telling People: “I was so excited he was coming up! He deserves to be on that stage Absolutely I thought [Beyonce] was going to win.” As for West saying he should have given the award to Beyonce: “You can’t please everybody. I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to what he does. How many great records has he put out in the last five years right?”
