'Fifty Shades' pre-sales 'much larger than expected' in South, Midwest
After Fifty Shades of Grey‘s global trailer was released six months ago—and has since been viewed more than 47 million times on YouTube—it was no suprirse that the film received the title of the fastest-selling R-rated title in Fandango’s history. And according to Deadline, the film made up for 60 percent of Fandango’s daily business on Tuesday, with MovieTickets.com reporting a similar phenomenon, with Fifty Shades accounting for 42 percent of its ticket sales on Monday.
So in light of the film’s success, Fandango decided to analyze where most of those ticket buyers were coming from. Looking at pre-sales history, Fandango separated out sales state-by-state, quickly discovering that Christian Grey and his many shades are a hit all over the country. But let’s just say that grey ties might mean the most to people living in the Southern and Midwest states.
Here’s Fandango’s list of the top 10 states where Fifty Shades pre-sales were “much larger than expected,” according to a press release. Leading the way is Mississippi, whose sales were nearly four times higher than Fandango anticipated:
1. Mississippi: 3.9x
2. Arkansas: 2.8x
3. West Virginia: 2.7x
4. Kentucky: 2.1x
5. Alabama: 2.0x
6. Louisiana: 2.0x
7. North Dakota: 1.9x
8. South Carolina: 1.8x
9. Iowa: 1.7x
10. Tennessee: 1.6x
Not mentioned: the book’s home state of Washington. Perhaps they’ve already had enough?
Fifty Shades of Grey arrives in theaters Feb. 13.
