The second book in Ransom Riggs’ Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children series, Hollow City, arrives in paperback on Feb. 24, bringing with it a preview of book three, Library of Souls. In the excerpt, included above, Jacob and Emma—two of the eponymous “peculiar children” with supernatural powers—find themselves caught between a rock in a hard place in this excerpt—or more accurately, between a rock, a speeding train, a pair of ghost police, and a monster made of nightmares.

The series is remarkable for its use of vintage photographs collected by the author, and the preview also includes a few photos that may be included in the third book, such as one of a young boy standing barefoot in a field.

Library of Souls is scheduled for release this September, and a movie adaptation of the series, directed by Tim Burton and starring Eva Green and Asa Butterfield, is set for March 2016.
