The confined social spaces of small rural towns tend to inspire straight-laced conformity, but in odd cases they can have the opposite effect. Hanna Brewer grew up in Bible-thumping Beaumont, Texas, and the experience drove her to become the wild singing drummer for the garage-fueled grunge-punk trio Purple, which raises a middle finger to society with such a contagiously obnoxious glee that you can easily forget you’re not in high school anymore.

For the video to “DMT,” from the band’s recent LP (409), the trio takes a trip out to the desert to, well, trip, and the results sound a little like L7 and the Butthole Surfers hooking up in the basement of a punk house.
