“When our idea of danger is eating gluten, there’s trouble afoot,” Parks and Recreation actor Nick Offerman says in a NASCAR ad that aired during the Super Bowl. “Yes, we have the people have gotten soft.”
It’s a joke playing on Offerman’s hyper-masculine image, but gluten-free eaters aren’t seeing it that way: Some organized a petition to get the ad pulled.
“[The ad] implies that we’re soft… we’re weak… we’re part of America’s problem,” an internet user going by the name Gluten Dude wrote on the Change.org petition. “When all we’re trying to do is manage our disease. Celiac can be a true pain. The media is not helping and this petition is [to] get NBC to see the light of day.”
Although nearly 18,000 people signed the petition, NBC aired the two-minute ad—gluten comment and all—during the Super Bowl. “Now I’d REALLY like to get the ad pulled … and not simply changed,” Gluten Dude wrote on the page after finding out it aired.
NBC did not immediately respond to EW‘s request for comment.
