Blythe Danner has landed a guest-starring role on NBC’s new drama The Slap, EW has learned exclusively.

Based on an acclaimed Australian miniseries and 2008 novel, The Slap is a complex family drama about what happens after a man (Zachary Quinto) slap another couple’s misbehaving child.

Danner (Meet the Parents, Will & Grace) will play Virgina, the mother of Anouk (Uma Thurman), a TV writer dating her show’s young leading man (Penn Badgley). Virginia, a celebrated Columbia Medical School Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, is both extraordinarily wise and capable of utter thoughtlessness, within the same sentence. She and her daughter are very close because Anouk has found a way of treating her mother as a friend, rather than a parent, a compromise that has great cost to it.

The Slap premieres Thursday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
