The first 'Star Wars' spinoff has a new writer
The first non-sequel standalone Star Wars movie of the Disney era is slated to come out in December 2016. Godzilla director Gareth Edwards is set to make the movie, and although we don’t know precisely who it’s about—Han Solo? Boba Fett? Star Wars Origins: Mothma Rising?—at least we know who’s writing it. The Hollywood Reporter says that the project just signed Chris Weitz as the new screenwriter, replacing Gary Whitta.
Anyone looking for clues about the spinoff will note that Weitz has a history of female-centric fantasy projects, having worked on The Golden Compass, the upcoming Cinderella, and The Twilight Saga—New Moon, the film that invented Taylor Lautner’s abs. Weitz also made About a Boy and American Pie with his brother Paul, so maybe Untitled Star Wars Spinoff #1 is a coming-of-age rom-com where young Han Solo is basically the Stifler of the Imperial Navy Academy.
