James Gunn confirms Lee Pace's Ronan won't appear in 'Guardians 2'
Despite how amazing it might have been, it appears Ronan won’t have an opportunity to challenge Star-Lord to a dance battle rematch.
In a Facebook Q&A, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn confirmed that Ronan the Accuser, played by Lee Pace, will not be returning in the Guardians sequel.
“Who knows,” Gunn replied to a question about whether Ronan would ever show up again. “But not in 2, no.”
Gunn’s response isn’t totally surprising, considering—Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy—Ronan is obliterated by the Guardians at the end of the film. While few people in comics, and by extension comic book movies, die permanently, Ronan’s death appeared to be finite, at least for the time being.
But Gunn certainly left the door open for a return. When asked in another segment of his Q&A whether he’d ever consider having Pace return to the franchise, Gunn replied, “Perhaps someday.” Pace also expressed interest in returning to the role in a recent interview.
Read the rest of Gunn’s commentary from the Q&A, in which he and a few guests like brother and actor Sean Gunn give a behind-the-scenes insight about what went into some of the film’s biggest moments. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is scheduled to debut on May 5, 2017.
