The Brothers McMullen filmmaker prides himself on his ability to pitch, making it ”feel like I was telling a story while sitting at the bar with a beer in my hand.” Fortunately, that’s also the easy tone of his memoir, which focuses on his hardscrabble moviemaking career after his initial brush with success 20 years ago. Burns has directed 10 more films since he was the prince of the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, and though you have to be a die-hard fan to know the titles of many of them, he has a good yarn or two to spin about each. When Burns was tempted by Hollywood, it was Tyler Perry who advised him to ”superserve your niche” and return to his Irish-American indie roots. B
