The roots-rockers of American Aquarium are firm believers in the power of straightforwardness. For the video for their new single “Man I’m Supposed to Be” (from their upcoming LP Wolves, out Feb. 3), a ballad that recalls Springsteen’s more tender moments, they recall the song’s birth, with frontman BJ Barham strumming an acoustic guitar in his apartment—a rare moment at home for someone who spends 300 days a year on the road.

“The song itself is an open letter to my wife letting her know that I may not be a lot of things, but I’m hers,” Barham writes in an email. “It was my first attempt at a love song, because frankly, it was the first time in my life that I had been so head over heels for someone that I wanted them to know, without a doubt, that I was 100 percent in it for the long haul. It’s simple. It’s straightforward. It’s exactly what I wanted to tell her. I’m not the best guy in the world, but I’m going to try to be the best guy for you.”

American Aquarium is on the road now.
