Ethan Hawke in Predestination

Ethan Hawke first teamed up with Australian directing brothers Peter and Michael Spierig on 2010’s Daybreakers, a cool-looking futuristic vampire caper that was full of the sort of potential that elevates expectations for the follow-up. Through that lens, their new project—featuring Hawke as a time-traveling cop—stumbles. The Spierigs’ visual mastery is ironclad, and they’ve built an immersive, noirish alternate universe. But Predestination‘s pace is too slack, and the brothers are so painfully tentative as storytellers that the easily guessed big twist gets three separate reveals. The scouting report on the directing duo remains ”Wait until next time.” C+
