Free 'Dead Kings' DLC for 'Assassin's Creed: Unity' launches today
- Video Games
Assassin’s Creed: Unity got off to a horrible start last November, with a buggy, broken launch afflicting a game that already had some problems to begin with. Since then, Ubisoft has aggressively patched the game in the hopes of fixing the myriad bugs afflicting it—which, in my experience, has indeed helped the game play far more smoothly. In addition to the constant bug-squashing, Ubisoft made Unity‘s first batch of downloadable content entirely free, presuming you still have a copy. That first bit of DLC, titled Dead Kings, is now available, with a brand-new trailer heralding its arrival. And you know what? It might even be worthwhile—but don’t hold your breath or anything.
Set after Robespierre’s Reign of Terror, which Wikipedia confirms is a real historical event (we didn’t play video games back then, we lived them), Dead Kings offers a decidedly different take on Assassin’s Creed gameplay, set primarily in the crypts and caverns beneath Paris. It’s very Tomb Raider, yes?
Oh, and it also comes with the totally historical and absolutely practical Guillotine Gun, which is hilarious and looks like this:
Although you’d be right to be skeptical, there’s actually a very logical reason for believing that Dead Kings might be good: as Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo points out, Dead Kings was developed by Ubisoft’s Montpellier studio, the team responsible for critically successful games like Rayman: Origins and ZombiU. We’ll be dusting off our copies of Unity to take a look at Dead Kings over the next couple of days. We’ll let you know how it turns out.
