The Oscar nominations announcement will aim for the stars in a different way this year.

Star Trek actor Chris Pine, his Star Trek director J.J. Abrams (also working on a little movie called Star Wars: The Force Awakens), and Gravity filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón will join Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs on Jan. 15 to reveal the contenders for the 87th Academy Awards.

Usually, only the 12 celebrity and movie categories are announced before a global TV audience, with one actor and the Academy president doing the presentation. Telecast producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan are adding extra announcers this time because now all 24 categories will be revealed live.

Pine, who has a film in contention this year with Into the Woods, will reveal most of the traditional dozen categories alongside Boone Isaacs, and Abrams and Cuarón will announce the competitors in many of the other behind-the-scenes fields that were previously only revealed via press release.

“This desire goes back many years, before Neil and I even produced the show,” Zadan tells EW. “We always have a conversation after the nominees are announced, ‘Hey, what got nominated in this category and that category …?” It always felt sort of frustrating as an audience member to not know what all the nominations are.”

Meron said it’s no accident that they chose two filmmakers to join the announcement rather than actors. “To have two world class directors expands the spotlight into a total look at the filmmaking process,” he said in an interview. “It was about expanding that spotlight and creating interest in the categories that people might not think are as important as the others.”

Boone Isaacs says this change was an easy sell for her: “The Academy is all about celebrating filmmaking. That includes all aspects and areas and departments, and all the talented people it takes to make a motion picture.”
