Director Liv Ullmann’s PBS-pretty adaptation of the 1888 August Strindberg play lacks brio but is compelling thanks to its three tough performers. Jessica Chastain brings the right mix of fragility and hauteur to the title role, a born-rich troublemaker sexually jousting with her valet (Colin Farrell). And as the valet’s fiancée, Samantha Morton, one of the least artificial actresses in the world, charts her character’s heartbreak without any of the self-pity normally assigned to ordinary women.
