Ever since How to Get Away with Murder debuted, eagle-eyed viewers have been scrutinizing the show to pick up on any clues that could lead to the identity of the killer. Now that Wes (Alfred Enoch) has been revealed as the one who struck the final blow, those same fans have turned their attention elsewhere—namely, to try to figure out what’s up with Bonnie’s (Liza Weil) random murder night hookup.

No, we’re not talking about her romp in the sack with Asher (Matt McGorry). We mean her lip lock with that mysterious bar patron (Pat Healy). There are plenty of theories about this man, including a few that are way out there—like the idea that Bonnie was getting his DNA so she could tamper with the testing of Lila’s unborn fetus in a bid to protect Sam (Tom Verica).

So, what’s really the deal with this guy?

“He only serves a significance in showing how sad Bonnie was that night, and desperate for some sort of connection,” executive producer Pete Nowalk tells EW. “She tried to get it from him. In a way, a lot of people can relate to when you just need to feel something. /you need to feel alive in some way. You can sometimes do very sad, gross things that you wouldn’t normally do in the bright light of day.”

But… but… but… the theories! “We’ve trained you well,” Nowalk says with a chuckle. “You’re always wondering. But not everything can be a plot thing. Sometimes there are just lonely character moments.”

So, there you have it, conspiracy theorists: The bar patron was just a one-off.

How to Get Away with Murder returns Thursday, Jan. 29 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
