Starz releases 'The Interview' from its output deal
Starz has let The Interview free from its output deal with Sony.
The network, which has exclusive pay-TV rights to Sony’s theatrical releases through 2021, announced on Wednesday that it has released the film in order to give Sony “maximum flexibility.”
“As the situation with ‘The Interview’ is new territory and has been constantly evolving, Starz released the film from its output deal in order to allow Sony maximum flexibility with their distribution strategy,” a Starz spokesperson said in a statement to EW on Wednesday.
Shortly after announcing it would, in fact, release The Interview in theaters on Christmas, Sony announced that starting on Christmas Eve, the film would be available on Google Play, YouTube Movies, Microsoft’s Xbox Video, and the website seetheinterview.com.
