There are a few absolutes in late-night talk show hosting: monologues, silly sketches, guest interviews, and having to keep audiences coming back after each one.

Future host James Corden had his chance to prove his skills on at least one of those when he appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

Ferguson and Secretariat, his faithful steed, welcomed Corden on the show—he's apparently not doing anything at the moment—so that audiences could find out a bit about the man who'll be taking over the time slot next year.

The current host certainly gave his stamp of approval, and not just because Corden claims to be 90 percent made up of biscuits. But before Ferguson completely signs off, he tests Corden on his hosting abilities by asking him to throw to a commercial break.

Corden will be throwing to many more commercials when he takes over Late Late Show hosting duties on March 23, 2015.
