Chelsea Peretti started her stand-up career by telling fart jokes
Chelsea Peretti has some advice for aspiring stand-up comedians: Stage time, stage time, stage time, stage time — oh, and stage time. And yes, she realizes how irritating repeating “stage time” is.
Peretti currently stars as Gina on Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine and just released a stand-up special on Netflix titled Chelsea Peretti: One of the Greats, but, just like any of the greats, Peretti had to get her start somewhere — and that start was on a stage where she made poorly received jokes about the always-popular subject of crop dusting.
Along the way, Peretti’s looked to people like Amy Poehler, Parker Posey, and Sarah Silverman for inspiration, and right now is watching up-and-coming comedians like Yassir Lester and Esther Povitsky.
“It’s not always the exact jokes, it’s when you talk to someone, do they have a different take on life?” Peretti says. “And these two kids, boy, they got it.”
Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns Jan. 4 at 8:30 p.m. on Fox. Chelsea Peretti: One of the Greats is now streaming on Netflix.
