English actor Jack O’Connell is about to burst onto American movie screens, portraying the late Louis Zamperini in Angelina Jolie’s World War II epic, Unbroken. But the rising star, who appeared in the hit Brit TV series Skins and wowed critics with his performance as a violent prison inmate in Starred Up, has another promising film set for February.
In ’71, O’Connell plays a boyish-faced British soldier who’s dropped into an angry hive of hostility when he and his unit and called in to quell a riot in Belfast in 1971, the height of The Troubles in Northern Ireland. When the chaos explodes, he gets stranded behind enemy lines, a vulnerable British soldier who becomes a valuable target for multiple unfriendlies. To get out alive, he’ll have to trust only the right people and make 1,000 split-second decisions—just one wrong decision will get him killed.
’71, which recently won Best Director for Yann Demange at the British Independent Film Awards, will open in theaters on Feb. 27.
