Barack and Michelle Obama's love story is getting its own movie
While most presidential biopics waste all their time talking about politics, a new film about the Obamas gets to the real story—how Barack and Michelle’s first date went.
EW can confirm that Homegrown Pictures is producing Southside with You, which will tell the story of Barack andMichelle Obama’s first date, which spanned Chicago’s South Side. Get on Up‘s Tika Sumpter is set to play Michelle, though casting is still underway for Barack. Deadline originally reported the news.
Southside will cover the day Michelle Robinson agreed to go out with a young Barack Obama, who was serving as an associate at Chicago law firm Sidley Austin. Michelle, his younger boss, needed some convincing, but eventually agreed to date him, and the film will follow the date as the two visited Chicago’s Art Institute and went to see Do the Right Thing, among other stops throughout South Side.
Richard Tanne, who wrote the screenplay for the film, will also direct, while Homegrown’s Stephanie Allain and Warner Independent’s Tracey Bing will produce. The film is set to start shooting in July on location in Chicago.
Though the search may still be on for a young Barack Obama, Jordan Peele has already shown he’s capable of handling a college-aged Obama and already has an audition reel ready and waiting to be submitted.
