Mark Duplass plays a midwife who seems to have his life pretty much together on The Mindy Project —but on HBO’s Togetherness? He’s a mess.

Togetherness is the latest project by Mark and Jay Duplass, brothers who’ve previously worked together on films including Baghead, Cyrus, and Jeff, Who Lives at Home. This HBO series marks their first time directing, producing, and writing a TV show together.

Mark plays Brett, who’s married to Michelle (Melanie Lynskey)—and who’s playing host to Michelle’s sister (Amanda Peet) and his best friend (Steve Zissis) who both need places to stay. Each character has their own complex problems, and judging by the trailer, each character has their own ways of dealing with those problems.

They cry, they scream, they laugh. It’s all pretty emotional—but don’t worry: There are also puppies and bounce houses and Oreos. That balances it out, right?

Togetherness premieres Jan. 11 at 9:30 p.m. on HBO.
