Cinema archaeologists might come across French animator Paul Grimault’s cuckoo satire and think they’ve discovered a splendidly fossilized episode of South Park. Finally being released Stateside after six decades of production troubles and rights issues, the film is suffused with a subversive attitude toward the rich and clueless, epitomized by a king at war with a talking bird. The fairy-tale tableau lifts from Hans Christian Andersen but is shot through with bits of burlesque sci-fi, including a giant robot with an orchestra in its chest. A-
