Box office report: everyone's going to see 'Mockingjay'
- Movie
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 looks like it just had the best opening day of the year.
According to Box Office Mojo, Friday estimates have the penultimate Hunger Games film towering at number one with $55 million in ticket sales. While it’s well above this year’s previous best opening day record holder—Transformers: Age of Extinction, which made $41, 868,135—it’s still the lowest opening the series has seen thus far. (The Hunger Games opened with $67.5 million, Catching Fire with $71 million.)
But people did see other movies Friday—Big Hero 6 came in second place with an estimated $4,484,000, just squeaking past last week’s number one opener, Dumb and Dumber To, which made $4,300,000. Interstellar also made roughly the same amount of money, coming in at fourth with $4,220,000, and Gone Girl completed the top five with a distant $800,000 in Friday ticket sales.
It’s pretty safe to call it now and say that Mockingjay Part 1 will win this weekend.
