Full-Time Freak

Finn Wittrock, who appeared in AHS co-creator Ryan Murphy’s HBO film The Normal Heart, had no idea his role on Freak Show would be so pivotal when he landed it. ”I was not going to be a season regular when we first started,” the actor explains. ”I had just a handful of episodes I knew I was going to do. After the first day of filming, Ryan was like, ‘We want to make Dandy a regular. Do you want to be on the show for real?’ I was like, ‘Great! I’m loving this guy!”’

Killing Costars

Wittrock’s murderous Mott has already dispatched two guest stars, Patti LaBelle and Matt Bomer (with whom he costarred in Heart). ”I realized Dandy almost only kills famous people,” he jokes. ”You’ll see — there’s more. Patti had invited me to one of her concerts, and I couldn’t make it. Then we filmed that scene and I was like, ‘Dammit, now I’ll never be allowed at a Patti LaBelle concert!”’

Exercise Exhibition

The Nov. 5 episode of the FX series found Dandy completing an elaborate exercise routine while dressed only in a pair of tighty-whities. So is Wittrock a modest man? ”I’m not modest anymore!” he says with a laugh. ”The thought of being that exposed was a little daunting. But everyone was very respectful. And Dandy isn’t shy, so that gives you some courage.”

An anthology series that centers on different characters and locations, including a haunted house, an insane asylum, a witch coven, a freak show, and a hotel.
