Hell on Wheels is getting a fifth season. But this will be the show’s final round — and it will be split across two years.
AMC has ordered 14 episodes to wrap up the show. But like the cable network’s approach to the final seasons of Breaking Bad and Mad Men, the final season’s schedule will be staggered, with half the episodes airing next summer and the other half in 2016. (Typically the network orders 10 episodes of Hell on Wheels per year, though this year upped that number to 13).
“With season five of Hell on Wheels, we are proud to bring our trans-continental journey to conclusion for the large, loyal audience that has traveled with Cullen Bohannon and his crew for so many years,” said AMC President Charlie Collier. “We look forward to appropriately honoring Hell on Wheels in this final season. Enormous thanks to the terrific writers, cast and crew for all they have achieved and for all that lies ahead in the Wild West.”
AMC notes that the Western drama starring Anson Mount and Colm Meaney opened up a new night of original programming for the network—Saturdays —and its current season is averaging 3.4 million viewers on TV’s toughest night to program.
