Based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe, Brad Anderson’s Stonehearst Asylum feels like the sort of gothic chillers Roger Corman and Vincent Price cranked out in the ’60s. Minus the goose bumps. Jim Sturgess plays a young doctor who arrives at a remote madhouse run by Ben Kingsley (hamming it up to the hilt) and falls for a beautiful patient (Kate Beckinsale). The big twist comes way too early, and despite some creepy ambience, the film’s mostly just a mess. C
