In Whiplash, Miles Teller plays a high-school drum prodigy traumatized by his bullying music teacher (J.K. Simmons). What films frightened Teller when he was young? We found out when he took our EW Pop Culture Personality Test. Watch the video and read a transcript below.
EW: Who was your first celebrity crush?
Teller: My first celebrity crush was Reese Witherspoon, in Pleasantville, I think, was the first thing I saw her in.
I saw her once at Central Park.
Scariest movie you saw as a child?
Scariest movie I ever saw was Event Horizon when I was, like, 11 years old. I snuck into a rated-R movie—it was the first rated-R movie I ever saw. I was so scared that when my mom picked me up, I admitted to everything. I said, “Mom, I just saw this rated-R movie, I’m so sorry, but it’s Event Horizon, and it just scared the crap out of me. I’m so scared right now.” And then Nosferatu. My grandma showed me when I was, like, 8, and she just didn’t understand how absolutely terrifying that movie is. That’s a scary frickin’ movie. I remember her making English muffins with jelly and laughing as I’m watching this movie with my heart being absolutely ripped out.
What movie inspired you to become an actor?
It was The Wizard of Oz that I used to watch, like, twice a day. (Looks around) Who laughed at that?
Which was your favorite character from Wizard of Oz?
All of them. I loved all of them. The Lion, Tin Man, depending on how I was feelin’.
What was your childhood nickname?
Miles the Masher was my childhood nickname. I got a lot of concussions. I was always wrestlin’ around. I was smashin’ stuff.
Final score: Miles the Confessor
