Aziz Ansari talks feminism on
Do you consider yourself a feminist? No? Well, Aziz Ansari doesn’t believe you.
“If you look up feminist in the dictionary, it just means someone who believes men and women have equal rights,” Ansari told David Letterman on The Late Show Monday night. “And I feel like everyone here believes men and women have equal rights, yeah?”
Ansari is performing two stand-up shows at Madison Square Garden Thursday night, so the Parks and Rec star went on Letterman to promote the shows and talk about why people should just accept the word “feminist.”
“If you believe that men and women have equal rights, if someone asks you if you’re a feminist, you have to say yes,” Ansari said. “Because that’s how words work. Like, you can’t be like, ‘oh, yeah, I’m a doctor that primarily does diseases of the skin.’ ‘Oh, so you’re a dermatologist?’ ‘Oh no, that’s too aggressive of a word!'”
Another way to tell if you’re a feminist, according to Ansari: if you go to a Jay Z and Beyoncé concert and don’t think about how Beyoncé should be off cooking Jay Z a steak instead of singing and dancing.
