Famously reclusive author Thomas Pynchon will cameo in Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming adaptation of his novel Inherent Vice.

Though Anderson would not confirm the cameo to Logan Hill of The New York Times, actor Josh Brolin did. “I don’t think anybody knew,” Brolin told Hill. “He came on as the kind of mercurial iconoclast he is. He stayed in the corner.” Anderson, however, said that he’s “staying out of it,” adding, “Somebody spent a long time deciding not to have themselves out there. There’s a reason for that. So I’m just going to step out of that.”

Of course, it will be hard to catch the Pynchon cameo, given that it’s unclear how the author currently looks. (Anderson told Hill: “I mean, even if he did, how would I even know?”) This is man who wore a bag on his head when he did a guest spot on The Simpsons, after all. Perhaps trying to identify Pynchon by voice could be the best route—after all, he did narrate a book trailer for Inherent Vice.
