Saturday Night Live - Season 42

As Saturday Night Live adds comedian Pete Davidson to its lineup, news has also emerged that another player will not be returning—at least in front of the camera.

EW can confirm that Mike O’Brien, an SNL writer since 2009 who made his debut as a featured player last year, will no longer be in the series’ cast. Deadline first reported the news. O’Brien will still be a writer on the show.

O’Brien had a following before his onscreen SNL debut, thanks to his web series “7 Minutes in Heaven,” in which he interviewed celebrities like Amy Poehler and Jon Hamm inside of a closet.

During O’Brien’s brief stint as a performer on the show, he appeared in charming and odd sketches like “Bugs,” in which he played a reporter trying to interview, well, bugs, and “Monster Pals,” the James Franco-starring saga about some a pair of monster friends. His quirky style elicited some vocal support: “It’s certainly not too early to point out that O’Brien is doing stuff on the show right now that is incredibly unique—to a point where I don’t feel it’s hyperbolic to say that, with his talent for combining ‘strange’ and ‘sincerity,’ there’s never been anyone quite like him to ever before pass through the halls of Studio 8H,” Mike Ryan wrote at Screencrush last spring. Alas, O’Brien’s brand of humor will now, once again, retreat behind the camera.
