Following last year’s Sound City, Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters are making a second foray into music documentaries—this time, taking the form of an eight-episode HBO series that ties into their upcoming eighth studio album.

Called Foo Fighters Sonic Highways, the series came out of the recording process for their forthcoming album of the same name. Since the band planned to record each of the eight tracks on Sonic Highways in a different landmark studio in America, the TV series zooms out to examine the musical history of each city they recorded the album in. Profiling Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington D.C., and New York, Foo Fighters Sonic Highways will feature iconic musicians and “tap into the musical heritage and cultural fabric” of each locale.

Foo Fighters Sonic Highways begins Oct. 17 on HBO.
