News broke of Lauren Bacall’s death Tuesday. The classic Hollywood star, known for roles in The Big Sleep and To Have and Have Not, was 89 years old. Friend and colleagues provided the following statements to EW about the Golden Age’s leading lady.

James Caan

She was a great, uplifting lady who was full of talent and fun. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with her. I will miss her dearly.

Seth MacFarlane

Lauren Bacall’s life is a life to be celebrated. I am told her last performance was on Family Guy. For that we are forever honored and privileged. Thank you, Lauren, for teaching us all how to whistle.

Barbra Streisand

What a terrible loss for us all. First Robin who was a genius and now Lauren. It was my privilege to have known her, to have acted with her, and to have directed her. And, most of all, to have had her as a wise and loving friend. She was an original. Even with all those great films we can visit again and again, she will be missed.

Nicole Kidman

I am deeply saddened by the loss of two magnificent people this week. Lauren Bacall was a dear friend, mentor and wonderful actress. Robin Williams touched the lives of everyone who knew him, whether they were friends or fans, bringing smiles and laughter into their lives. I will miss them both tremendously.

Michael Imperioli

Betty was the last of the mythic Hollywood deities. There are none of her caliber left on this earth. As a colleague (and for me to be able to say that is still inconceivable) she was honest, hilarious, extremely generous, and kind. But it was her fearlessness that really knocked me out. I treasure every second I spent in her company.

Paul Bettany

I met Lauren when she was in her late 70s. She was whip smart, deliciously acerbic, and wildly irreverent. She could fix you with those cool mercurial eyes that never quite stopped moving. It’ll be difficult for me to imagine them still.

Natalie Portman

Lauren Bacall’s strength, wit and talent matched her extreme beauty. I had the great fortune that she so generously allowed me to direct her in my first short film. It was a true honor to watch her act up close—her sense of humor, timing and imagination were apparent in every moment. I will never forget the gift of her trust in me and the inimitable and vast talent she had. My deepest condolences to her loved ones.
