Some Montana-based Jeff Bridges fans recently launched a petition to get the Big Lebowski star to run for the U.S. Senate. But Bridges doesn’t think he’s the man for the job—or at least, his wife doesn’t think he is.

“I look down and I see this thing, ‘Jeff Bridges for Senate,’ and I say, ‘What?'” Bridges told Howard Stern on Monday. “Evidently, there’s a group of people that have called in and want me to run for senator of Montana, like 1,000 people, and so I say, ‘Sue?’ And she looks at me and goes, ‘Don’t even think about it.'”

Petition writer Lizbeth Pratt presents a convincing case, though: “[Bridges] has loved Montana and all it represents since he first set up residence in Park County four decades ago. He’s internationally reknowned [sic], but he is also highly accessible,” Pratt wrote on the petition’s Change.org page. “We need The Dude to be Montana’s next U.S. Senator!” So far, over 1,000 agree.

Bridges has been nominated for six Academy Awards and won the Best Actor Oscar in 2009 for his role in Crazy Heart. His next film is The Giver, which arrives in theaters Aug. 15.
