Jj Murphy

Veteran Northern Ireland actor J.J. Murphy, who was most recently cast on the HBO series Game of Thrones, has died. He was 86.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that Murphy, who died just four days after filming his first scenes on the show, was playing Ser Denys Mallister, the oldest member of the Night’s Watch. His other credits included a role as a village elder on Dracula Untold.

Murphy had told friends he was excited to be working on the series, which is filming its fifth season in Northern Ireland.

Murphy worked for many years at the Lyric theater in Belfast, alongside actors such as Liam Neeson and Ciarán Hinds.

Update: Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff released the following statement: “We will not be recasting J.J. Murphy. He was a lovely man, and the best Denys Mallister we could have hoped for. And now his watch is ended.”
