No movie ever wanted to be The Big Chill so badly. When college friends (including Aubrey Plaza and Max Greenfield) reunite after one of them attempts suicide, they dance to baby-boomer records, name-check Jeff Goldblum, and muse, ”This is like one of those ’80s movies…where it’s, like, a big group of people.” That line might be funny if it didn’t take itself seriously. Greenfield and Plaza give such dry performances, they’re almost sarcastic. And as nostalgia for one’s parents’ generation, it’s too obvious, especially since it’s directed by Jesse Zwick, son of Ed Zwick, who exec-produces here and, as a producer of thirtysomething, did that whole ”big group of people” thing in the ’80s.
