With each season of Breaking Bad, the show’s fan base grew, right up until showrunner Vince Gilligan decided that Walter White’s story had come to end after five seasons. But not everyone agreed with Gilligan’s choice. And as far as industry newcomer Larry Shepherd is concerned—spoiler!—Walt’s presumed death is not the final chapter of the story. And that’s exactly why he has launched a Kickstarter campaign for his own Breaking Bad spin-off titled Anastasia.
On the Anastasia Kickstarter page, Shepherd describes his series as picking up directly after Walter White’s collapse in the Breaking Bad finale, when a mystery person appears and drags Walt out of the meth lab by his ankles. Anastasia will focus on two U.S. Marshals—played by obvious choices Val Kilmer and Slash—who try to answer three very important questions: Is Walter White alive? Where is he? And who dragged him away?
In the journey to answer these questions, the show will dive deeper into the lives of the marshals. Shepherd explains that Kilmer’s character will be a recovering alcoholic, which will allow the show to invite real recovering alcoholics into the fold for some unscripted scenes… because every good drama needs a little improvisation, obviously.
According to the Kickstarter page: “There will be regular 12 step meeting scenes in Anastasia that Kilmer attends. We will invite stars in the entertainment industry who are in recovery themselves. Russell Brand, Jamie Lee Curtis, Steven Tyler, Dick Van Dyke, Drew Barrymore, Robert Downey Jr., Robin Williams, Neil Young, Eminem, on and on.”
But if Shepherd’s goal is to get Val Kilmer an Emmy—his words—then he’ll need to be surrounded by other talented actors. And in Shepherd’s ideal world, that means involving Jana Mashonee and Laura San Giacomo. It also means involving stars who will play fugitives in full prosthetic makeup, with their true identities revealed only after all is said and done.
Rounding out Shepherd’s plan: he wants the show to premiere the Monday before Halloween (specific!) and run for 10 episodes in its first season. But seriously, he’s already finished all 10 scripts.
Anastasia is hoping to raise $500,000 by Friday, Aug. 1… and, you know, somehow sign the likes of Val Kilmer and Slash. Contributors could win everything from a T-shirt to a part on the show.
