World Cup final sets viewership and social-media records
Germany took a narrow 1-0 win over Argentina to win last night’s World Cup final, but the match’s ratings scored much higher numbers.
The match, which saw the first-ever championship win for a European team on South American soil, drew the largest-ever audience in Germany, with 34.75 million in overnight viewings, according to Deadline. The big winner, however, was social media.
Facebook reported that 88 million (including 10.5 million in the U.S., 10 million in Brazil, over 7 million in Argentina, and 5 million in Germany) people had more than 280 million social interactions related to the final. And the match broke the record for the highest level of Facebook conversation for any single sporting event. The previous largest event was the 2013 Superbowl, which landed a Beyoncé-and-blackout-fueled 245 million interactions.
The final also set another social-media record: 618,725 tweets per minute on Twitter at the end of the match, exceeding the previous 580,166 tweets per minute during Germany’s 7-1 squash of Brazil. Other tweet-able moments included Mario Götze’s goal in overtime and when Argentina’s Lionel Messi received the Golden Ball trophy in an awards ceremony.
ABC and Univision will release statistics for American TV viewership later today. So far, those ratings reached their highest point during the tie between Portugal and Team U.S.A. last month.
