'Game of Crowns' vs. 'Thrones' and more fictional-turned-reality shows
Game of Crowns
- TV Show
Game of Thrones is the latest fictional show to get the reality treatment — well, sort of. Tonight, Bravo premieres Game of Crowns, a reality show that sounds suspiciously like the HBO fantasy drama but is really about pageant ladies vying for the winning tiara. Which, you know, could get as dangerous as Game of Thrones.
This isn’t the first time a fictional show has spawned a similar-sounding reality show. MTV released Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County in 2004 after seeing how successful the fictional The O.C. was; Bravo did something similar when they launched The Real Housewives in 2006, two years after ABC drama Desperate Housewives premiered. But how similar are these reality shows to their fictional parents?
Game of Crowns, Bravo (2014)
Sounds like: Game of Thrones (2011-present)
Similarities: The ladies in Game of Crowns are fighting it out for first place in beauty contests; the characters of Game of Thrones are duking it out to gain possession of the Iron Throne. Backstabbing, conflict, and all-around drama ensues.
Differences: Everything else.
Sister Wives,TLC (2010-present)
Sounds like: Big Love(2006-2011)
Similarities: Both follow the life of a polygamist man and his multiple wives.
Differences: Much of Big Love‘s first season is about how the family is trying to keep their situation a secret from everyone in their lives, while Sister Wives focuses more on the problems — and positives — that arise when you’re a polygamist.
Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County, MTV (2004-2006)
Sounds like: The O.C. (2003-2007)
Similarities: Both the reality and fictional ensembles are full of teenagers with wealthy parents and seemingly no rules to abide by.
Differences: Things got real on The O.C. all the time: There were guns and drugs and Marissa Cooper’s death. On Laguna Beach, though, the biggest issue was whether Stephen liked LC or Kristin more — which, to be fair, is a prettyserious issue.
NYC Prep,Bravo (2009)
Sounds like: Gossip Girl (2007-2012)
Similarities: Like the teens of Laguna Beach and The O.C., the high school-aged kids in these shows live lives of luxury. But while the California-based teens had somewhat normal lives, the New Yorkers of Gossip Girl and NYC Prep act like they’re full-on adults, attending charity events and crazy parties all the while trying their hardest to get into the Ivy Leagues.
Differences: NYC Prep was tame compared to the raunchiness of Gossip Girl — no sex in empty bars or videos of teens snorting coke to see here!
Naked Castaway, Discovery Channel (2013)
Sounds like: Cast Away (2000)
Similarities: Man is alone on deserted island, man has to survive for days without any of the luxuries of non-deserted islands.
Differences: Wilson is regrettably missing from the Discovery show. And Naked Castaway’s star didn’t arrive to the island via a sinking plane — as far as we know.
The Real Housewives, Bravo (2006-present)
Sounds like: Desperate Housewives (2004-2012)
Similarities: Highly dramatic housewives are living the lifestyle of glamor on the outside, but are (of course) dealing with a ton of capital-D Drama on the inside.
Differences: In Desperate Housewives’ first episode, we meet the main characters as they try to solve the mystery of a neighbor’s suicide. In The Real Housewives of Orange County’s first episode, we meet Kimberly as she’s debating getting a boob job. So, that about covers it.
Game of Crowns premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.
