As anyone who’s ever had an AIM, GChat, or Twitter account knows, a cute avatar is key to a good online persona. In China, consumers have made that quest into a giant market.

Fortune reports that  MYOTee, a cartoon avatar creator with dozens of custom options, has become the hottest mobile app in the nation’s variable market. Earlier this month, the app received over a million downloads in just a couple of days — hitting the top of Apple’s free app ranking in China.

MYOTee began as a T-shirt company, but eventually transferred its designs from cloth to the Web. Users upload their characters to popular Chinese media sites such as Sina Weibo and WeChat.
