• Rooney Mara and David Fincher are reportedly circling the espionage thriller Red Sparrow. The two haven’t worked together since 2011’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. The film will be set in present-day Russia, centered on an intelligence officer who is forced to become a “Sparrow” — someone who basically seduces people for information. She falls for the CIA officer she’s assigned to operate against. Fox is also in talks with Eric Warren Singer, who scripted American Hustle, to adapt the Jason Matthews book. Darren Aronofsky was previously considering the project. [Deadline]

• Keiynan Lonsdale (Dance Academy) will play Uriah in Insurgent. The Dauntless-born initiate and fellow Divergent befriends Tris (Shailene Woodley) after she transfers from Abegnation. This will be his first appearance in the film series, even though he did have a role in Veronica Roth’s Divergent.

• Forest Whitaker (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) is in final talks to join director Antoine Fuqua‘s boxing pic Southpaw, starring Jake Gyllenhaal (Prisoners) as a prizefighter trying to recover from a tragedy and repair a damaged relationship with his daughter. Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter penned the script. [Variety]

Tony-winner Mark Rylance is in talks to join Tom Hanks in Steven Spielberg‘s untitled Cold War thriller. The film follows an American lawyer who is recruited by the CIA to help rescue a pilot detained in in the Soviet Union. Joel and Ethan Coen penned the latest version of the script. [Variety]

• Marion Cotillard (The Immigrant) will star in Mal de Pierres, a film based on Milena Agus’ novel that follows a free-spirited woman for two decades across a loveless marriage and an affair. Nicole Garcia (Going Away) will direct. [Variety]

• Allison Janney has joined the cast of CBS Films’ ensemble comedy The Duff, starring Mae Whitman as a high school student who realizes that her high school peers think of her as the “designated ugly fat friend” of her group. Janney will play her mother. [Deadline]

• Marieh Delfino (Boston Public) has joined Karyn Kusama‘s thriller The Invitation. She’ll star alongside Logan Marshall-Green in the pic about a man who realizes his ex-wife is possessed and plans on hosting a troubling dinner party. [The Wrap]

• Tracy Spiridakos (Revolution) will play a woman trying to find her biological father in Scotland in the romantic comedy Byrd & the Bees. She meets a romantic prospect along the way (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). General Hospital actress Finola Hughes will direct. [The Wrap]
