“Based on the novel by Nicholas Spark.” This message at the beginning of a movie trailer speaks volumes.

Directed by Michael Hoffman, The Best of Me stars James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan as high school sweethearts reunited 20 years after they split. The plot: Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. Girl falls in love with boy. Girl’s dad does not approve. Boy and girl are separated for years. Boy and girl (now man and woman) come back together. Love still exists for man and woman. Will their love make it this time? Probably, unless someone dies. It is Nicholas Sparks after all…

“I just want what’s best for my daughter, so it’s going to end right here.” Check. “You aren’t just someone I loved back then, you are the very best of me.” Check again. Nicholas Sparks has his formula down.

But most of all, we here at Entertainment Weekly can’t wrap our heads around the casting of the men. We just don’t see Luke Bracey as Marsden’s younger, high school self. It isn’t believable. Thankfully, Liana Liberato as young Michelle Monaghan is much more convincing. You win this round, The Best of Me.
